Electric cars handle your personal transportation needs with zero emissions on the road. It’s great for the climate. However, they still rely a lot on steel. When fossil-free steel becomes part of the equation, the carbon footprint from the steel production can also be eliminated.

Change is on its way

SSAB is taking the lead in decarbonizing the steel industry. Together with our partners LKAB and Vattenfall we have come up with HYBRIT, a new revolutionary way to produce steel without emitting CO2. With HYBRIT, we aim to be the first steel company in the world to bring fossil-free steel to the market already in 2026. By 2045, we will be practically fossil free!

Our goal is to reduce Sweden’s CO2 emissions by 10% and Finland’s by 7%.*

Why fossil-free steel?

A growing global population, an increasingly higher standard of living and greater urbanization will trigger a rise in global steel demand. Recycled scrap will not sufficiently meet the growing demand for new steel. The carbon footprint in the steel industry is thus a challenge for the world.
